Artwork Analysis
In this work, Wen Chang-Shuen arranges the flow with much effort. The line of sight of the characters presents a wonderful conversation, as if the repeated reminders of the senior can be heard.
Wen is also good at conveying the gentleness and sweet temper of women in works with the warm, smooth, and classical characteristics of eastern gouache. Although the senior in the work has her back turned to the audience, they can still feel an indescribable gentleness and sweetness across the scene. With skillful and smooth contouring, the artist presents the clothes and dresser in two dimensions yet the reflection of the silver circlet stands out in particular, like adding a highlight to the scene. Wen presents the decorative nature of eastern gouache with detailed brushstrokes. However, the characters in this work are unlike the characters in most paintings who face the audience with their front. In contrast, only one character in this work faces the audience. This kind of smart arrangement fills the scene with dramatic tension.
