Ode to Spring
Artwork Analysis
Wen Chang-Shuen (1925–2005) was an important eastern gouache artist in the history of Taiwanese art. As his Mandarin name suggests, his style is characterized by warmth and smoothness combined with elegance and excellence. Wen even established the “Taiwan Greenwater Gouache Painting Association” in 1991 with senior artists Huang Ou-Po and Hsieh Jung-Fan to actively promote eastern gouache. Besides attracting more people to learn and understand eastern gouache, the society has enabled eastern gouache to gain a foothold in Taiwan’s art learning. The verdant leaves in the foreground and pink flowers in the middle ground create a contrast with the azure sky in the background. These refreshing and beautiful colors give off the hope and vigor of spring. Branches and leaves in the painting are intertwining and extending. The tree in the foreground stretches horizontally, while the tree trunk in the background rises vertically. This simple arrangement of the image brings the visual flow from the lower left toward the upper right in the background to present a refreshing and comfortable sense of space. The tone is soft. Pale red and green are used bring a chromatic contrast. The brushstroke also matches the color scheme to smoothly, gently, and ingeniously present the touch of the spring breeze with dotted clusters.
