Guerilla Girl-Girls War Era Ⅲ
Artwork Analysis
Hsu Wei-Hui (1979-) hails from Zhongli in Taoyuan. After graduating from the Department of Arts and Crafts Education of National Hsinchu University of Education, she went to the US where she earned an MFA in painting from Savannah College of Arts and Design in Georgia and an MFA in fiber from Cranbrook Academy of Art in Michigan. Hsu mainly focuses on mixed medium and installation art for her creative works. This work features petit guerilla girls clad in military uniforms on top and lovely skirts for the lower bodies, holding a weapon in the right hand, and performing a lovely gesture with the left hand like pulling on the skirt or carrying a handbag. The cluster of micro girls stand atop a model of a hill. Hsu expresses her own thoughts and those of her peers through this group of micro girls. The work is intended as the artist's guerilla attack on fashion consumption. The girls' stoic spirit and gentle and beautiful figures convey inner sentiments laden with conflict and contradiction. The viewer's train of thought is next guided to the militant strength generated by galvanizing the group so they can bravely take up the challenge in real life. The artwork clearly expresses the contemporary clashes and evolution of thinking that traditional girls and modern girls have to deal with in the face of realizing their dreams.
