Guerilla Girl-Bear Light?Heavy?
Artwork Analysis
Hsu Wei-Hui (1979-) hails from Zhongli in Taoyuan. After graduating from the Department of Arts and Crafts Education of National Hsinchu University of Education, she went to the US where she earned an MFA in painting from Savannah College of Arts and Design in Georgia and an MFA in fiber from Cranbrook Academy of Art in Michigan. Hsu mainly focuses on mixed medium and installation art for her creative work. This work has a dome-shaped mirror for its upper half to reflect the guerilla girls on the dome below. Rice is scattered on the floor on which the artwork is placed. The idea is to convey a sense of helplessness felt about the realities of life. Hsu expresses through this work her feeling powerless as an individual and the difficulties in actualizing grand ideals. She hopes to congeal the power of the micro girls so they can raise their hands and fight against the pressure and challenges coming from the dome above. White rice symbolizes the realities of life. The micro girls stand on the giant white lifeform. Hundreds of guerilla girls each holding a weapon, with the other hands held up to bear half the weight of the lifeform. Hsu allegorically expresses a sense of contradiction between her ideals and the realities with the dome in contrasting black and white as a simple concrete symbol. The artwork is an embodiment of Hsu's inner balancing and counter-balancing act, as well as an encouragement for herself and the viewer to bravely face up to the challenges.
