Artwork Analysis
Chen Chieh-Jen (1960-) was born in Taoyuan, Taiwan, and graduated from vocational high school. He currently lives and works in Taipei, Taiwan. In the 1980s during the period martial law period, Chen challenged the political system through performance art. After martial law was lifted in 1987, Chen went into creative hibernation, which ended in 1996 when he started to create art again. He is currently a world-renowned avant-garde artist. Chen Chieh-Jen has always cared about the margins of society and the city every topic related to people. The image of the ruins, besides displaying a unique aesthetics of ruins, gives contemporary viewers a visual retrospect of history. In "Bade Area - Office No. 3," we see many objects of symbolic significance photographed by Chen. Of the objects, the computers and typewriters from an old era represent the intent of the economy to take off; the grand office desk, chairs, a world map and a desktop world globe are all metaphors for the global imagination and ambition that once passed through this place. However, these objects are now merely remnants of urban development, deserted in the space. What was once prosperous is now in ruins, presenting an ironic and acute contrast with the historic incidents of fraudulent bankruptcy of the 1980s and 1990s.
