"Bade Area"Office No.2.
Artwork Analysis
Chen Chieh-Jen (1960-) was born in Taoyuan, Taiwan, and graduated from vocational high school. He currently lives and works in Taipei, Taiwan. In the 1980s during the period martial law period, Chen challenged the political system through performance art. After martial law was lifted in 1987, Chen went into creative hibernation, which ended in 1996 when he started to create art again. He is currently a world-renowned avant-garde artist. "Bade Area" is a video work created by Chen Chieh-Jen in 2005. Bade in Taoyuan County was once home to Taiwan's labor-intensive factories. Chen Chieh-Jen invited temporarily hired workers in his video to sneak into various buildings, offices, rooftops, deserted spaces, and factories sealed by court due to fraudulent bankruptcy. These temporary workers stream and saunter through the spaces and engage in repetitive yet aimless acts of labor, or search for things without knowing what they are searching for. In "Bade Area - Office No. 2," the closely positioned desks, scattered chairs, garbled cables, typewriters, and computers seemingly left behind while still in use makes it easy to imagine how busy it might have been, though it is completely deserted now. Through low-saturation grey/black/white color tones, the image presents the loss and indifference of labor.
