Art Journey
Artwork Analysis
"Art Journey" by Chiang Chin-Lan presents a dreamlike, eccentric atmosphere. The romantic, fantasy-like picture is divided into several blocks. On the whole it looks like a combination of geometric window frames inserted with extraordinary elements: plant patterns in the upper left corner and something explosive in the center, from which cloudy, fog-like white patches spread out.

In "Art Journey," Chiang applied her habitual use of the medium of oil painting and additional collage techniques, for example the clouds and fog in the center, plus a small obscure clip of newspaper and magazine cut-outs. The diversified use of mediums and techniques, simplistic color blocks, and romantic yet grounded coloring all contribute to the heightened serenity of the painting. The focal point is drawn to the explosiveness in the center, depicted with bright colors, unusual shapes and motion, thus provoking an even richer imagination in the viewer.

The painting was displayed at Chiang's 2017 solo exhibition, also titled "Art Journey," in which all works exhibited shared the western concept of simple, abstract expression to portray the artist's innermost exploration of the universe and the spirit behind it. The painting presents the concept of Yin and Yang, emptiness and fullness, embedded in eastern classical philosophy, embodying the grand interrelated, interdependent energy between nature, universe and humans.
