Maple Dream
Artwork Analysis
Visually, although Chiang Chin-Lan seems to present the overlapping images of flowers, the maple leaf is her actual subject matter. Instead of representing the beauty of maple leaves in a realist style, she presents them with a silhouette-like abstract art vocabulary. Instead of using a bright tone or the strong tangerine red of maple leaves, the artist chose pink, yellowish green, or dark green with lower saturation, suggesting the feminine trait unique to the artist. Additionally, the artist employs the scraping, wiping, and blasting techniques to enrich the work’s layered effect to show that brushstrokes are not the only way to make oil paintings.Regarding this work, Chiang said: “In my opinion, instead of just reflecting objects seen in the world, art should reveal the reality of nature! In this work, I want to present the beautiful red maple scene I saw when I was in the USA. By blending this scene with a pleasant, colorful, and emotional vibe, I wanted to convey the purity outside objects. With an interesting color block layout matched with high-lightness colors, I attempted to express the Eastern philosophy and macroscopic nature concerns in detail. The work needs a perfect balance and interaction to present the interplay of yin and yang and the correspondence of emptiness and fullness. With the rise of global warming and extreme weather events in recent years, the artist wishes to urge people to care more about Earth’s ecology and natural evolution.”
