Mom's Drawer
Artwork Analysis
"Mom's Drawer" by SHYU Ruey-Shiann is a drawer embedded in the wall. It automatically and slowly reaches out from the wall and then retracts, as if being pushed and pulled manually. When the drawer opens, some old photographs are projected onto the ceiling. The projected images blur gradually and become clear again, moving repeatedly and ceaselessly back and forth.

From the opening and closing of the drawer, from clear to blurry projected images and back again, the repetition goes on and on much like human memories that turn blurry from clarity. Occasional sightings of a person or an object will evoke a surge of memories. This is also like snippets of one's childhood memories that are clear at times and fuzzy, indistinct, and elusive at others. According to Hsu, the work is inspired by his mother. In all stages of life, from growing up, starting a family, birthing and rearing children to the moment the children started their own families and careers, his mother has always stored the memories in the drawer. As the mother's youth and looks faded with time, these photographs and objects continued to evoke many recollections of short and clear images.
