Lao-Jie River
Artwork Analysis
Text: "Lao-Jie River" Name seal: "Tong" (intaglio), "Yang-Tze" (name seal, relief). Lao-Jie River, located in Taoyuan City, got its name from flowing through Zhongli Lao-Jie. It originates in Longtan District and runs through four districts: Longtan, Pingzhen, Zhongli, and Dayuan. The text forms a work of installation art on the wall behind the Southern Taoyuan Youth Activity Center of the Department of Cultural Affairs, Taoyuan City Government. Tong's calligraphy creates a visual and spatial tension that encourages a dialogue with the space through the use of words and deliberate blankness. The work adds a sense of poetics to the local vista. With a view to letting the general public once again experience the beauty of Lao-Jie River and restore the natural ecology in and along the river, the "Total Remediation Plan for Lao-Jie River" was launched in 2011. This artwork thus serves as an important benchmark in the elevation of cultural imagery. When the creator Tong Yang-Tze (1942-) worked on this artwork, he leaned towards the calligraphic expressivity of Wang Xizhi (303-361) and Huai Su (725-785) while incorporating western theories of composition to produce an aesthetic that encompasses both modern graphic design and traditional calligraphy.
