Lily of the Valley
Artwork Analysis
The bell-like plant in the work is the lily of the valley (Convallaria majalis). As a member of the Liliaceae, the lily of the valley has good cold resistance. Its style is lovely and fascinating. The flower looks like a hanging bell or the sweet heroine in fairytales, full of the feminine gentleness, that people won’t ever tire of. We just can’t help to admire the wonders of nature. A flock of birds are bouncing up and down the branches, as if performing a wonderful duet with the flowers.
The work is characterized by setting the color focus in the foreground. The milky lilies of the valley form an interplay with the verdant green surroundings in a picturesque disorder to make the scene pure but never dull. Birds shuttling across are like elves, adding vivacity and vitality to the whole picture. Huang Po-Chin excels at making contrasts with transparency and saturation, creating a sense of space in the front of and behind the lilies. With the kneading paper technique used in the background, the whole work is enriched without becoming chaotic, filled with elegance.
