A Song on Texture of Rocks
Artwork Analysis
This painting by Wu Chang-Peng (1934-2013) features the banks of a lake, mountains, and a forest of plum trees, inscribed by the painter with "A Song on Textures of Rocks. Wu Chang-Peng, Wanli, Taipei, 1989." Name seal: "Wanli" (relief), "Wu Chang-Peng" (intaglio), Head seal: "Wanli" (relief).
This painting presents a scenery of a lake and mountains overlooked from the banks, with blossoming plum trees in the foreground, the mirror-like lake surface in the middle ground, and changing mountain walls and lingering clouds and mist in the background. The painter applied a special water marbling technique in which ink is dropped into water to produce swirls and ripples, followed by oil and pigment which repels the water to produce various patterns; a piece of paper is then applied to the water surface and the patterns on the water are imprinted on the paper, forming an abstract view. The painter then dots, dyes, outlines, and paints it to form a figurative theme. The mountain walls at the opposite bank are formed using this technique. A light wet dyeing with dark ink and color is then applied to the foreground; the trunks of the plum trees are outlined with charred ink and dotted with pink and pinkish-orange dots to form clusters of flowers, rendering a rich gradation.
Wu Chang-Peng excelled at depicting the landscapes, clouds, snow, and sea waves seen during trips, capturing day-to-day scenes and recording the local customs of Taiwan. Wu’s artistic creation covered traditional ink painting and modern ink painting. He utilized multiple techniques to create diverse visual effects, producing an ever-evolving painting style. For this painting, he used the water marbling technique to create an ever-changing expressive image. He has been awarded MoE Arts Education Contribution Award, Taoyuan Arts Promotion Office Creation Contribution Award, Taiwan Provincial Teacher Art Exhibition and Japan National Ink Painting Exhibition, etc.
