This work by Taiwanese artist Xiao-Yu is a reinterpretation of the Huashan Temple Stele, a stone inscription from the Eastern Han dynasty, nearly two thousand years ago. The original was written in clerical script — a formal, ancient style known for its horizontal strokes and steady rhythm. Xiao-Yu studies these features closely but writes with freedom. His brush stretches the lines into fine threads, then lets them break or fade, like cracks on weathered stone. Some strokes stop abruptly, leaving gaps that feel like marks of time. Although the surface looks wild, its structure still follows the discipline of the old stele. By mastering the rules, Xiao-Yu finds the space to move beyond them. In this meeting of ancient solidity and modern speed, his calligraphy breathes with both order and freedom.
