This work by the Japanese artist Ro Boku captures a powerful memory from his youth. It recreates the moment he watched the avant-garde calligrapher Inoue Yūichi give a live demonstration. At the center, you’ll see a small slip of paper showing Inoue’s bold character “Stele” —written with sharp, cutting strokes that seem to burst with energy. Around it, Ro Boku adds his own delicate cursive writing, describing his thoughts and admiration from that day. In doing so, he transforms a brief moment into a lasting dialogue between teacher and student, between one generation of avant-garde calligraphers and the next. Aspiration is both a tribute and a bridge —it connects two artists through ink, gesture, and memory, and reminds us how creative spirit is passed from one hand to another.
