The Japanese artist Nakamura Fusetsu copied the famous Tang-dynasty model Wansui Tongtian Tie. The original was a long handscroll, but here he re-created it as a series of album leaves. His brush moves between dry and wet ink. Horizontal lines rise and fall gently, while verticals carry hidden strength — delicate as silk, yet full of power. He kept the uneven spacing of the original letter format to preserve its personal feeling, and enlarged a few characters to guide the viewer’s eye and rhythm. Through this work, Nakamura re-interpreted the ancient “Stele school” of calligraphy with a modern vision, challenging the more rigid “Model school” of his time. Rather than a simple copy, it became a creative transformation —a bridge linking classical Chinese tradition with the emerging modern art of East Asia.
