9-Fabienne VERDIER-Au Plein de la Montagne (High Up in the Mountains)
- Transcript
- Fabienne Verdier was born in Paris, France, and aspired from a young age to become a painter. In the 1980s, she traveled to Sichuan, China, where she undertook a decade-long artistic journey, immersing herself in the study of landscape painting and calligraphy. Upon returning to France, she began creating abstract works using a custom-made, oversized brush crafted from 35 strands of horsehair. Suspended from an adjustable steel cable and equipped with a bicycle handlebar as a rotating grip, the brush allows her to engage her entire body in the act of painting, producing sweeping, fluid gestures with force and grace.
The work Au plein de la montagne (High Up in the Mountains) features bold black strokes layered over a ground of saturated red and blue.
The triptych format and vivid color palette evoke the grandeur of Northern European Renaissance altarpieces, while the dynamic, calligraphic brushwork reflects the aesthetics of East Asian ink traditions. This piece exemplifies Verdier’s distinctive visual language, a seamless fusion of Eastern and Western artistic vocabularies.
