4-The Nine Songs-The Nine Songs
- Transcript
- Tong Yang-Tze is one of Taiwan’s most internationally visible and influential artists. Rooted in calligraphy, her work spans multiple artistic forms and media. In her early practice, she focused on the structural balance of brush and ink, but over time, and under the influence of modern painting movements, her work evolved into a bold, expressive style that blends calligraphy with painterly abstraction. Her writing exudes theatricality, often pushing the boundaries of legibility and reshaping the visual identity of written language.
The piece on view was originally created for the performance of Nine Songs by the Cloud Gate Dance Theatre. Spanning more than 12 meters in length, the horizontal scroll is inscribed with poetic text in a rhythm that shifts between exuberant leaps and solemn pauses. With dramatic variations in character form and brushstroke—from dry to wet, thick to fine, swift to slow—the work moves like a dancer across the stage, fluid and full of life.
