- At the top center of this piece are the four characters 「螳螂之斧」 (The Mantis Raises Its Arms), describing an act of overestimating one's own strength. However, the phrase also carries a more empowering interpretation—symbolizing the courage to challenge formidable opponents without fear.
This work is part of Ro Boku’s Fragments of Writing series, which originated from his 2019 solo exhibition in Lukang. For that show, he cut and repurposed leftover paper fragments from old doors, transforming them into what he calls “fragments” (破片). These fragments serve as the foundation for new creations, into which he breathes fresh artistic energy.
Through this process, Ro Boku expresses his determination to break free from conventional boundaries and continually challenge himself. Each fragment becomes a symbol of resilience and transformation—remnants of the past turned into bold declarations of creative intent.
