One by One, Yet One III

Transcript
One by One, Yet One is part of an ongoing series by Ro Boku, inspired by the philosophy of Japanese thinker Miura Baien. Miura believed that all things in the universe are composed of qi—the vital energy—and that everything exists in a state of simultaneous opposition and unity, such as the dynamic interplay between yin and yang. The phrase “一一即一” (One by One, Yet One) reflects this principle of duality and interdependence that governs all natural phenomena.
At the center of the composition is the character 「一」 (one), written in bold brushstrokes with dense ink. Although the stroke is visually fragmented, it maintains an overall sense of cohesion and continuity. On the left side of the piece, phrases written in both light and dark ink present a series of paired opposites, suggesting the idea that opposing forces can, in fact, be complementary and harmonious. These contrasts are sharply set against the splattered ink marks at the end of the right side, creating a visual tension that adds dynamism and vitality to the work.
Through this interplay of structure and spontaneity, Ro Boku not only pays homage to Eastern cosmology but also invites viewers to reflect on the hidden unity within duality—a concept as philosophical as it is poetic.
