- Kim Ki-chang began his painting career in 1931 when he was selected for the 10th Joseon Art Exhibition. Along with his wife, he was seen as an artist who completed modern Eastern painting in Korea. Kim's styles evolved with contemporary trends, ranging from meticulous color paintings to abstract art, Art Informel, Korean folk paintings, and ink painting.
His "Dots and Lines" series from the 1990s features large canvases with dots and lines painted using a mop soaked in ink, creating intense screens with a white streak effect.
This particular work, created in 1980, features thick strokes of clerical script in dark ink, neatly composed on the right side of the screen. The fast-paced brushstrokes and dark ink use foreshadow his later "Dots and Lines" series. Kim Ki-chang's work demonstrates his ability to transform his style and methods according to the times, making significant contributions to modern Korean art.
