This work is a collection of seal engravings by Chang Tien-chine, presented in a screen (yinping). This form of screen is originally created to meet the needs of exhibitions. It typically brings together multiple seal impressions, such as the red-ink designs stamped from carved seal faces, as well as rubbings of the inscriptions carved along the sides of the seal stones. Although seal engraving is limited by the structure of the characters and its functional use, it still offers rich space for artistic expression within its small, precise format.
In this piece, Chang presents 20 seal designs along with their side inscriptions, drawing from classical and modern literature from both East and West. One of the most charming touches: the original stones used to carve the seals are embedded directly into the screen itself. With this inventive detail, viewers no longer need to bend down to see the detail of each seal; they can stand tall, observe comfortably, and effortlessly engage with the artistry.
