Exhibition Introduction

Transcript
Welcome to Spilled words all over the floor: Chang Tien-chine. This exhibition, selected as part of the 2025 open call at the Hengshan Calligraphy Art Center, showcases the work of artist Chang Tien-chine. Born in 1984, Chang works across ink painting, calligraphy, and seal carving. His creative inspiration is drawn largely from everyday life, transformed through brushstrokes and impressions into deeply felt personal expressions.
The exhibition is organized into three themes: “Writing”, “Engraving”, and “Ink,” presenting Chang’s continuous reflection on and practice with text throughout his creative process. In “Writing,” Chang explores the expressive power of brushwork and the fluidity of ink. Through shifting structures of brushstrokes and variations of ink, his characters seem to move, breathe, and resonate with emotion and memory. “Engraving” presents a more distilled and contemplative facet of his art—his seal engravings, simple yet profound in form, reflect his philosophy on life while pushing the boundaries of traditional seal aesthetics. In “Ink,” Chang returns to the classical notion of the shared origins of painting and calligraphy. These works fuse text and image, brush and composition, crafting poetic, dreamlike scenes that stir both the eye and the imagination.
More than a personal showcase, this exhibition invites a conversation: How do we see and make sense of writing today? Step into Chang Tien-chine’s world and join him in rethinking the essence of writing—its form, emotion, and possibilities in the contemporary world.
