Large Seal Script

Transcript
After graduating from the National School of Arts (now National Taiwan University of Arts), Chu Chen Nan studied calligraphy under the well-known calligrapher Hsieh Chun-an. Under Hsieh’s guidance, he learned seal script, clerical script, and Wei stele inscriptions. Hsieh’s deep knowledge of stone drum script and clerical script had a strong influence on Chu, shaping his artistic path.
Through years of study, Chu mastered the essence of seal script and later combined it with his running cursive script to create his own unique style. This period of learning became a key turning point in his calligraphy career.
The artwork displayed here is one of Chu’s early practice pieces using Large Seal Script, an ancient form of writing. The tight structure and steady brushstrokes show his solid foundation and deep understanding of different seal script styles, including bronze script and stone script. This work also reflects his deep respect for traditional calligraphy and his dedication to learning.
As you look at this piece, notice the careful balance in each character—each stroke carries both tradition and personal interpretation, marking an important step in Chu’s artistic journey.
