In 2020, after recovering from a serious illness, Chu Chen Nan created this large calligraphy artwork to express his thoughts on life’s ups and downs and the value of relationships. The three characters for “Unspoken” are written in gold paint on a black background. After his illness, Chu found it hard to put his emotions into words. Instead, he poured his feelings into his brushstrokes, inspired by the saying, “There is no need for words.” The bold and dynamic lines carry a deep sense of emotion and strength. This piece has patterns that look like water running down a surface. This adds an aged, time-worn feeling to the artwork, symbolizing the marks left by time and memory. The mix of dark ink tones with shining gold strokes creates a strong contrast, adding depth and energy to the composition. Through this work, Chu shows not only his artistic skill but also his determination and confidence in his art. As you stand before it, take a moment to feel the emotions within the brushstrokes—sometimes, what is left unspoken can be the most powerful message of all.
