This artwork features an excerpt from Beholding the Lushan Waterfall, a poem by Li Bai, one of the most famous poets of the Tang Dynasty. In the poem, the waterfall rushes down from the mountaintop, like the Milky Way falling to Earth. To bring out the poem’s meaning, Chu Chen Nan chose a long, vertical scroll so that the words seem to flow downward like a waterfall. His free-flowing brushstrokes and lively lines capture the energy and movement of the falling water. Chu was inspired to create this work after visiting the Hengshan Calligraphy Art Center many times. Seeing the water features at the center gave him new ideas about how to express the beauty and power of water through calligraphy. This piece not only shows the possibilities of calligraphy as an art form but also reflects the endless vitality of culture itself. As you look at this artwork, follow the movement of the strokes—just like a waterfall, the ink rushes, sways, and flows with life.
