Work 65-2

Transcript
Kim Chong Yung was not only a sculptor but also an extraordinary calligrapher with a deep understanding of calligraphy. He admired the 19th-century Korean calligraphy master Kim Jeong-hui, and people often compare his abstract sculptures to calligraphic brushstrokes. However, Kim Chong Yung did not aim to create three-dimensional brushstrokes. Instead, he explored the “beauty of structure” in Kim Jeong-hui’s calligraphy and found a connection to sculpture through this structure.

Kim Chong Yung’s work reflects the solid, formative nature and structural beauty found in both Kim Jeong-hui's calligraphy and Cézanne's aesthetics. This abstract sculpture excludes all descriptive elements, connecting simple geometric cubes vertically and horizontally. This reduction to pure structure, without any excess, captures the fundamental principles, creative attitude, and spirit of Kim Jeong-hui’s calligraphy.

Kim Chong Yung’s sculptures manifest the structural beauty of calligraphy in a different medium. His work showcases the essence of form and structure, highlighting his innovative approach and deep respect for traditional aesthetics. As you observe this piece, notice how the simplicity and solidity of the geometric shapes convey a sense of balance and harmony, embodying the spirit of both calligraphy and modern art.
