- Transcript
- Zheng Xiaohua, a disciple of Beijing calligrapher Ouyang Zhongshi, obtained China’s first-ever doctoral degree in calligraphy in 1998. He has made significant contributions to the modernization and academic development of calligraphy while maintaining a strong foundation in traditional techniques.
His exhibited work, Everlasting Glory, showcases his refined brush technique, rendered in a bold, sweeping style that reflects his personal vision. The opening character “千” (thousand) is executed with a dynamic and unrestrained flourish, conveying a sense of freedom and ease. The character “秋” (Autumn) is particularly striking, employing an ancient script with complex strokes that require meticulous control, yet the result is both challenging and captivating. The entire piece is written using a combination of seal and clerical script techniques, and each character imbued with its own distinct vigor and form. The character “盛” (flourishing) is rendered in a cursive script, and the overall composition of the four characters is balanced and harmonious, embodying strength and grace.
