Calligraphy, which began as the art of expressing written characters, has, over time, transformed through the evolution of scripts, the use of various tools, and the infusion of the artist’s cultural and aesthetic sensibilities. Even in today when handwriting is no longer the most common way to communicate, calligraphy continues to be a discipline that people study and admire for its profound cultural depth. Chinese characters have not only created countless masterpieces throughout Chinese history but, through cultural diffusion, have also given rise to unique calligraphic traditions in many neighboring countries within the Sinosphere and distant regions influenced by Chinese culture. Prominent examples include Japan’s shodō and Korea’s seoye, where each country has incorporated its own scripts and distinctive styles, turning calligraphy into a cherished national heritage with a rich and vibrant legacy. While calligraphy, with its character-based medium, may not easily become a mainstream art form internationally, it nonetheless exhibits diverse styles and unique characteristics across different cultures. To showcase the development of calligraphic art in various regions and to foster international cultural exchange, we have built upon Taiwan’s history of calligraphy interactions with other regions to organize the International Master Calligrapher Invitational Exhibition. It is our hope that this exhibition will deepen the understanding of calligraphy’s growing global presence, hence the name INKFINITY, symbolizing the limitless potential of this timeless art form.
