Overview

From May 8 to August 3, 2026, the Hengshan Calligraphy Art Center of the Taoyuan Museum of Fine Arts presents Hide and Seek: Yi Chun Wang Calligraphy Exhibition, a solo exhibition featuring new works by Yi Chun Wang, recipient of the 2023 Hengshan Calligraphy Award.

The Museum first held the Hengshan Calligraphy Award Exhibition in 2022, and the second edition expanded in scale to occupy the entire building. Building upon the Wang’s award-winning exhibition Pace (2023), this presentation draws on the everyday life she shares with her cat, exploring the dynamic between “hiding” and “finding.” Through calligraphy, Wang initiates a game of mutual search with viewers. Concealing herself within her works, she employs the language of the everyday to invite viewers into the interplay of ink and blank space. Here, one may find a quiet corner of ease, where writing transforms into a gentle and poetic form of understanding.

The exhibition unfolds across four sections. The first, “Hiding Within the Pace,” invites viewers to set aside the pace of contemporary life and to discover moments of slowness, as well as processes that cannot be rushed. The second section, “Day After Day,” takes “what my cat has taught me” as its point of departure, presenting large-scale installations and video works produced in collaboration with selected brands, capturing the heartwarming moments from everyday life. In “Finding Me,” large-character calligraphy challenges both physical and physiological limits, inviting viewers to move through the space, read the works through their bodies, and experience the visual impact of monumental scale. The final section, “Against the Light,” concludes with words of blessing. Through light and humorous phrases, the works engage viewers in dialogue, encouraging them to choose for themselves whether to hide or not, and to reconsider the course of their lives.

Yi Chun Wang’s practice departs from conventional approaches to calligraphy. While her texts range across classical scriptures, modern poetry, and everyday language, she consistently engages with contemporary spatial contexts. The exhibition brings together 65 works from recent years. Whether in intimate works or large-character calligraphy, Wang continues to challenge her physical endurance and control, pursuing greater refinement in her brushstrokes while developing a distinctive calligraphic language of her own.
