Thru the Chalkroom
Artwork Analysis
"Thru the Chalkroom" by Huang Hsin-Chien is a new media VR video. It's presented in 3-channel video strewn with dense text, images and symbols in the video, like the wall paintings in ancient caves. As the viewer roams through the images marked by intaglio on a backdrop, an entrance to a certain cave emerges among the images, guiding the viewer to enter deeper into the "remains."

The images in the video are taken from old objects from Taoyuan and reassembled. Images from the Danan old compound of the Special Police First Headquarters to the Danan Forest Park connect with the past and forecast the future, placing the viewer in a video of interspersing the virtual and the real, old memories and fresh innovations. After streaming through endless fantastical spheres, a new space is unveiled and a future prospect for Danan disclosed.

Huang took his inspiration for "Thru the Chalkroom" from "The Peach Blossom Spring," a fable by the Eastern Jin Dynasty poet Tao Yuan-Ming (365-427). The protagonist passes through after trail to finally arrive at a peach blossom spring. As the viewers, we are much like the man from Wuling man in "The Peach Blossom Spring," traversing through the land of Taoyuan from its past to the future before finally entering a new landscape. "Thru the Chalkroom" was created by Huang Hsin-Chien at the invitation of the Taoyuan Museum of Fine Arts for the 2019 Taoyuan Land Art Festival and was displayed in Danan Forest Park.
