Cacti
Artwork Analysis
This painting by Wu Chang-Peng (1934-2013) depicts a sight of multiple varieties of cacti growing in clusters. Painter’s inscription: "Cacti. Wu Chang-Peng, Taipei, Summer, 1995." Name seal: "Wanli" (intaglio); Head seal: "Wan-Li" (relief); Corner seal: "Wu Chang-Peng" (relief).
This painting depicts a cluster of cacti from a perspective of life sketching, taking a realistic approach to detail the varied appearances of the cacti, some round and pointed, short and stubby, lean and elongated, others with dispersed branches. The painter applied the boneless technique and color of many gradations to portray the cactus shapes and give them a three-dimensional light-and-shadow treatment, while the white paint for the needles results in an overall bright and warm coloring. The crags are skim-dyed with ink, and the background entirely smudged in a dark, cold, abstract gray and blue color schemes. A contrasting juxtaposition of realistic and Xieyi approaches, bright and gray, cold and warm color schemes is in place to accentuate each other and invigorate the space with a profuse diversity.
Wu Chang-Peng excelled at depicting the landscapes, clouds, snow, and sea waves seen during trips. He was also skilled at capturing day-to-day scenes and giving everyday minute vistas a detailed rendering. He utilized multiple techniques to create diverse visual effects, producing an ever-evolving painting style.
