Walking En Route in Balong
Artwork Analysis
This work by Huang Nung (1945-2018) depicts the scenery alongside the Balong ancient trail in Fuhsing District of Taoyuan City. The trail sits on Lala Mountain. "Balong" means cypress or giant tree in the Atayal language, and used to be home to tribes of the Atayal Indigenous people. Cliffs and gullies occupy most space of the painting, with only a line of sky left at the top. A barely seen mountain dwelling sits atop the cliff like a secluded place. Painter’s inscription: "Secluded dwelling in mountains by steep cliffs on Balong Trails. Nong, 1994." Name seal: "Huang" (relief).
This painting has been created through the "ink-accumulation technique," which stacks up one layer of ink after another with light green and light reddish-brown colors to render the texture of lush grass and trees. Certain blankness is kept amid the doting, dyeing, blotting, and brushing brushwork to create a dense depiction that nevertheless does not stifle. Modern painters famous for their use of the "ink-accumulation technique" include Huang Bin-Hong (1865-1955) and Li Ke-Ran (1907-1989). Huang Bin-Hong’s use of ink is rich in gradation, dense yet not dragging. Li Ke-Ran’s composition usually features nearly fully occupied spaces, in which mountains rise high into the sky and inscriptions are placed in the deliberate blank of narrow skylines. This work by Huang Nung vividly captures the spirit of the two masters that preceded him.
Being an expert in calligraphy, ink painting, oil painting, and watercolor painting, Huang Nung played with the traditional and the contemporary, as well as ink painting and western painting. His creative vision is to "maintain the character while varying the techniques; as long as vitality is injected, the painting embodies my spirit." Huang was frequently invited to exhibitions at home and abroad, such as the Taoyuan Fine Arts Exhibition, China-Japan-Korea Calligraphy Exchange Exhibition, and Guangdong-Taiwan Calligraphy Group Exhibition. In 2019, the Department of Cultural Affairs of Taoyuan City organized the "An Old Farmer in the Inkstone Field: Mr. Huang Nung (Lian-Sen) Calligraphy and Painting Memorial Exhibition."
