The Hengshan Calligraphy Award aims to recognize calligraphy art exhibitions of significant historical value, reflecting the spirit of the times, and demonstrating an international perspective with innovative viewpoints. In the 2023 Hengshan Calligraphy Award, a total of 31 exhibitions were nominated for consideration. Following preliminary and final reviews, Wang Yi-chen's exhibition "Pace" has been selected as the first prize winner.

A total of 31 submissions were received for the 2023 Hengshan Calligraphy Award. After qualification and preliminary reviews, five exhibitions proceeded to the final review stage, indicating intense competition. According to the evaluation process, five exhibitions received more than half of the votes from the preliminary review committee, advancing to the final review stage. During the deliberation process, committees for preliminary and final reviews, consisting of domestic and international experts and scholars, were invited by the organizing committee to review the nominated exhibitions. Individual opinions were discussed, exchanged, and consensus was reached.

The shortlisted are as follows: “Pace,” “The Cold Flowers, Grew in Old Cliffs: Buzi Art Collection Exhibition," "Hsiao Yi-Fan Ink Calligraphy & Paintings," "Waving Script," "I Could, What if: Yang Ping Solo Exhibition." These exhibitions are presented as solo exhibitions by calligraphy artists, showcasing creative achievements in various calligraphic scripts, mediums, or interdisciplinary integration in different spaces and environments. They exhibit bold, free, and unique characteristics, reflecting the diverse cultural values of contemporary calligraphy development.

Wang Yi-chen’s "Pace" is the recipient of this year's award. Through the unconventional use of exhibition spaces such as gardens, walls, windowsills, and cabinets, Wang Yi-chen inscribed large characters, reminiscent of proverbial sayings, to remind urban dwellers of the importance of "slowing down" and nurturing their minds and bodies. This approach transcends conventional limitations, allowing for the free imagination of discourse and showcasing the diverse possibilities of exhibition spaces. In “The Cold Flowers, Grew in Old Cliffs: Buzi Art Collection Exhibition,” Buzi's distinctive calligraphic style attracts attention, showcasing a clear trajectory of creative evolution over thirty years through family and collector collections, highlighting a departure from the constraints of traditional studio writing and embodying a shift from external to internal intensity and experimental breadth.

Within “Hsiao Yi-Fan Ink Calligraphy & Paintings,” Hsiao’s calligraphic creations often feature Ming dynasty literati scrolls and variant styles, oscillating between text and graffiti, elegance and elegance. By deriving meaning from the Six Classics, Hsiao Yi-Fan creates infinite possibilities for the integration of calligraphy and painting. In “Waving Script,” Chris Cheung utilizes interdisciplinary media such as installation performances, EEG headbands, and 3D printing to respond to the Jijiupian and expand into the context of contemporary technology art, offering a fresh, multidimensional, and intriguing viewing experience. In his “I Could, What if: Yang Ping Solo Exhibition,” Yang emphasizes the modernization of calligraphy and self-practice, shaping an ever-open aesthetic perspective through diverse explorations beyond the boundaries of calligraphy and painting mediums.

The organizer of the Award will invite the winner to hold a new exhibition at the Hengshan Calligraphy Art Center and provide a maximum exhibition production fund of 2 million New Taiwan Dollars.

The Hengshan Calligraphy Award looks forward to inspiring calligraphy art creators and exhibition planners to explore the various possibilities of calligraphy art in contemporary times with a more diverse and open vision and perspective, thereby promoting the development and continuation of calligraphy art.
