Suburb in Autumn
Artwork Analysis
Painted in 1991 by Tai Wu-Kuang (1943-2020), "Suburb in Autumn" features the autumn scenery in the suburb where wild ducks play among miscanthus along the banks of the water. The painting employs a bold diagonal composition; in the foreground swing a large strip of miscanthus filling the triangle in the lower right cut off by the diagonal of the painting. In the middle ground sparsely covered by the miscanthus, ducks are moving around in small herds in the water and along the banks; placed in the background is the river, the farthest point of the line of sight, in a place close to the upper part of the painting frame. The painter has depicted a large tract of miscanthus to bring out the feeling of autumn, while the ducks add liveliness and vitality. Inscription: "Suburb in Autumn. Life sketching by Wu-Kuang, Zhongli, Year of Xin Wei." Name seal: "Tai" (relief); Corner seal: "Heaven rewards the diligent" (intaglio); The official seal is illegible.
In the foreground a cluster of miscanthus leaves and miscanthus tails are painted using dry and wet ink painting along with deliberate blank; the riverbank is dyed flower blue using wet brushstrokes while the water is left blank. The ducks either rest or move around on the banks, or take a swim in the water, rendering a leisure atmosphere. Their feathers in black and white become the visual focal point of the painting.
Tai Wu-Kuang has said that he values four principles when creating artworks: life sketching, bright and pure artistic attitude, calligraphy skills, and compositional tension. The subjects of his creations mainly cover simple and natural day-to-day life scenes; his painting style reflects the influence of his mentor Lin Yu-Shan (1907-2004), in that his painting scenes usually express the leisure and carefreeness characteristic of the philosophy of Lao Tzu and Chuang Tzu. This painting demonstrates Tai Wu-Kuang’s extraordinary skill in transforming simple subjects into heartfelt scenes. He has held several solo exhibitions; his works are collected by the Taipei Fine Arts Museum, National Taiwan Museum of Fine Arts, Kaohsiung Museum of Fine Arts and National Museum of History, etc. He has published several exhibitions and painting catalogues.
